Physics is the science that investigates the structure, interactions, and laws of motion of matter, as well as their practical applications. As a fundamental discipline of the natural sciences and a major source of modern scientific and technological advancement, physics plays a vital role in understanding the natural world and driving technological innovation. With the continuous expansion and deepening of human knowledge and practice, the scope and depth of physics have also evolved considerably. Its various branches are classified according to different forms of matter and their modes of motion. Although these branches focus on distinct aspects of physical phenomena, they are interconnected and collectively constitute an integrated discipline.

The major research areas of physics include theoretical physics, particle and nuclear physics, atomic and molecular physics, plasma physics, condensed matter physics, acoustics, optics, radio physics, computational physics, and related fields.

The undergraduate program in Physics at Hubei University was established in 1958 and is one of the earliest undergraduate programs established at the university. It was among the first provincial-level “Featured Programs” designated by Hubei Province and was selected as a Ministry of Education National Featured Major Development Program in 2008. In 2019, the program was selected as one of the first National First-Class Undergraduate Major Development Programs.

The program is supported by a range of high-level academic and teaching resources, including a provincial key discipline in Physics, a first-level master's degree authorization in Physics, a master's degree program in Curriculum and Instruction (Physics), a Provincial Demonstration Center for Physics Experimental Teaching, a National Teaching Team for Core Physics Courses, a Provincial Teaching Team for Core Physics Courses, as well as a number of provincial-level high-quality and first-class undergraduate courses.

The program has achieved outstanding results in talent development and has made significant contributions to society by preparing generations of highly qualified professionals. Its alumni include more than ten nationally recognized scientific and technological leaders, represented by Academician Wang Qiuliang of the Institute of Electrical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, as well as nearly one hundred provincial-level scientific and technological innovation leaders. The program has also cultivated numerous outstanding professionals and exemplary figures in secondary education and industry.

The Physics program is committed to cultivating high-caliber, innovative and outstanding talents with strong academic and professional foundations. Graduates are expected to possess sound political and ethical qualities, a broad humanistic background, and strong scientific literacy; acquire a systematic understanding of the fundamental theories and methods of physics; and develop solid mathematical foundations and experimental skills. The program also emphasizes scientific research and practical capabilities, adaptability in professional settings, teamwork and collaboration, a broad international perspective, a strong spirit of innovation, and a sense of social responsibility. Graduates are well prepared to pursue careers in teaching, scientific research, technology development, and management in physics and related fields.
