The School of Physics at Hubei University has a long and distinguished history. Its origin can be traced back to 1942, when the Department of Mathematics and Physics was established at Hubei Provincial College of Education. In 1958, the Department of Physics was formally founded and launched an undergraduate program in Physics, becoming one of the first four undergraduate majors established at Hubei University. In April 1998, the Department of Physics merged with the Institute of Piezoelectric Ceramics Technology to form the School of Physics and Electronic Technology. The School was subsequently renamed the School of Physics and Electronic Science in September 2013 and officially became the School of Physics in September 2022.

The School currently offers two undergraduate programs: Physics and Quantum Information Science. The Physics program was designated as one of the first Provincial Brand Majors in Hubei Province in 2004, recognized as a National Characteristic Specialty in 2008, and selected as a National First-Class Undergraduate Program in 2019. The School hosts a Master's Program in Physics, a Professional Master's Program in Physics Education, and a Doctoral Program in Nanomaterials and Devices. Physics has been designated as a Key Cultivation Discipline of Hubei Province and a supporting discipline within the Provincial Advantageous and Characteristic Discipline Cluster. Physics and Condensed Matter Physics have both been included in the U.S. News Best Global Universities Subject Rankings.

The School has 61 faculty and staff members, including 47 full-time academic staff, 7 doctoral supervisors, 11 professors, and 27 associate professors. Among them are recipients of prestigious honors and talent programs, including the Ministry of Education's New Century Excellent Talents Program, Distinguished Young and Middle-aged Experts of Hubei Province, and experts receiving special government allowances from the Hubei Provincial Government. The School is home to a National Teaching Team for Core Physics Courses, a Provincial Teaching Team for Physics Core Courses, an Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Scientific Innovation Team of Hubei Higher Education Institutions, and an Innovative Research Group supported by the Hubei Natural Science Foundation. It also offers two National First-Class Undergraduate Courses and two Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Courses. Over the years, the School has cultivated numerous distinguished alumni, including Academician Qiuliang Wang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.

The School possesses a number of provincial-level research and teaching platforms and actively participates in the construction of several high-level research centers. These include the Hubei International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Quantum Optics and Devices, the Hubei International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Advanced Functional Magnetic Materials (China–Russia), the Hubei Provincial Demonstration Center for Basic Physics Experimental Teaching, the Hubei Key Laboratory of Micro/Nano Electronic Materials and Devices (co-established), and the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Intelligent Sensing Systems and Security (participating institution).

The School focuses on four major research areas: Theoretical Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Optics, and Computational Physics. Distinctive research strengths have been developed in topological quantum states, quantum information science, strongly correlated electron systems, spintronics, ultrafast spectroscopy, complex systems and networks, high-energy and particle physics, and two-dimensional quantum materials. Over the past five years, faculty members have published nearly one hundred papers in leading international journals, including *Nature Materials*, *Nature Communications*, *Physical Review Letters*, *Advanced Materials*, and the *Physical Review* series. The School has secured more than thirty research grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and other funding agencies. It has also received numerous awards, including the Second Prize of the Hubei Provincial Natural Science Award, the Special Prize and First Prize of the Hubei Provincial Higher Education Teaching Achievement Awards, and the Second Prize of the National Professional Degree Graduate Education Teaching Achievement Award.
